We are excited to share the latest update in our ongoing collaboration with Birka Folkhögskola.
Ann-Kristin, principal at Birka, recently invited a group of migrants, many of whom are part of our 3 Kitchens project, to take part in a workshop titled “The needs, wishes and educational ideas to develop.” The goal was to gather insights and inspiration directly from participants on how to shape future learning opportunities.
The workshop touched on several themes important to the participants, including:
-
Cooking traditional and Swedish dishes
-
Baking bread and cakes using recipes from various countries
-
Creating meeting places for building networks, developing language skills, and fostering new connections
-
Developing IT skills
-
Gaining entrepreneurship knowledge
-
Exploring international partnerships and exchanges
The next step is for Birka Folkhögskola to summarise the insights and ideas from the workshop. This will help inform the design of future courses that are engaging, relevant, and rooted in the experiences of the migrant community.
What is Folkbildning?
Folkbildning is a uniquely Swedish concept referring to the work of study associations and folk high schools. Its aim is to make education and knowledge accessible to all, outside the boundaries of traditional academic institutions. As stated in a Swedish government bill:
“Folkbildning should give everyone the opportunity to increase their knowledge and education together with others for personal development and participation in society.”
We look forward to the continued growth of this partnership and the exciting opportunities it brings for learning, inclusion, and community-building in Krokom.
