Hi! I’m Neli Bogdanova, a 20-year-old first-year student at HU University of Applied Sciences in Utrecht, the Netherlands. I’m thrilled to share my experiences with volunteering in the food sector and how it has influenced my perspective.
In early March 2024, my group and I embarked on a meaningful social project. We volunteered to bake homemade cookies for KoffieHuis Amsterdam, a respected establishment known for its support of individuals experiencing homelessness. Our goal was simple yet significant: to provide these freshly baked treats, along with smiles and good wishes. This initiative was a small step towards achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals). By extending our compassion and solidarity, we aimed to enhance the well-being and dignity of those in need.
In April 2024, I had the opportunity to volunteer with Groentetas Utrecht, a 100% volunteer-run, not-for-profit organisation. They focus on providing affordable, healthy food, supporting local producers, shortening supply chains, reducing food waste, and minimising greenhouse gas emissions. Although I was new to their community, I quickly felt the satisfaction of contributing to their mission and learning about their values. I shared my experiences and offered advice, gaining valuable insights and contributing to their efforts in a meaningful way.
Volunteering in the food sector has proven to be a win-win experience. It’s about more than just giving your time; it’s about learning, growing, and gaining a fresh perspective. The experience not only allows you to contribute to important causes but also helps you develop new skills and broaden your understanding of the world. If you’re unsure whether volunteering is worth it, I assure you it is. The personal growth and connections you make are invaluable, and the positive impact on your own life and others is profound. So, take the plunge, be brave, embrace new opportunities, and you’ll find yourself feeling fulfilled, included, and happy with the difference you’re making.
